Most grocery advice starts by telling you what a family your size ought to spend. That is the wrong end of the problem. What you actually need to know is whether your own number is drifting, and which part of it is doing the drifting — because a household that has quietly added forty dollars a week to the same shop does not feel it happening, and no national average will tell them.
This calculator works from your numbers, not a benchmark. Put in what you spend now, add the changes you are considering, and it shows what each one is worth over a year. Nothing is stored, nothing is sent anywhere, and there is nothing to sign up for.
Grocery Budget Calculator
Tell us who is in your household and we will show what the USDA says a nutritious week of groceries costs at three spending levels.
Based on the USDA Food Plans, Cost of Food at Home, June 2026. USDA updates these monthly for inflation. All plans assume every meal and snack is prepared at home; restaurant meals, takeout, alcohol, and household supplies are not included. These are national benchmarks, not personalized advice.
How to read what it gives you
The annual figure is the one that changes behavior, and it is also the one people get wrong in their heads. Eight dollars a week sounds like nothing and is four hundred and sixteen dollars a year. That is the entire point of running it: weekly amounts are easy to dismiss, and the same amount stated annually is hard to.
Be honest rather than optimistic with the inputs. A change you will keep for six weeks and abandon is worth roughly a tenth of what the calculator says, so it is better to enter one habit you will actually hold than four you would like to.
Where to go once you have your number
If the total is higher than you expected, the fastest reductions are usually in how you shop rather than what you buy — our complete guide to saving money on groceries works through that in order of effort. If the number is already tight and the problem is price rather than leakage, reducing the bill itself is the better starting point. If the leak is in the week rather than the shop, meal planning around your number is the next step rather than a separate project. And if delivery fees are part of what you are paying, our grocery delivery comparison covers what those actually cost, including without a membership.
And if groceries turn out to be the smaller half of the problem, our Family Budget Calculator puts this number beside the rest of your month — housing, transport, childcare and the rest — and shows what is actually left once they are all in.
